“Bingo!” It’s a word I think we probably have all said after a round of the popular game. We can also use the classic game to build rhyming skills. Yep, rhyming bingo is not only fun, but it’s also educational. Phonological awareness activities are a great way to get a young child ready to read.

Materials Needed: alphabet bingo sheets (free printable below) and counters (candies, buttons, crackers, etc.)

Just print out the bingo sheets. I’ve included 8 FREE printable bingo boards (see below) that are in color. Each board is different in the set. You could laminate the boards if you want to use them for years to come.

Give each child a handful of counters. We used animal crackers. You could also use counting cubes, candy or buttons.

PLAYING RHYMING BINGO

Have the kids cover up their free spot in the middle of the board.

Call out a word. Each child should place a marker on a picture that rhymes with the word called. Get five in a row or column and call, “BINGO” to win.

You could make up your own words or use this list of words to call out.

fox, car, throw, power, wig, plane, bent, rake, blue, hat, cone, bite, house, pie, stuck, bear, funny, bun, me, goat, racket, paw, log, and yarn.

How to play Bingo With Kids

Place all the bingo cards face down in a pile. Turn one card around and then whoever has that image should place a manipulative or bingo marker on that part. The first to get three in a row (horizontal, vertical or diagonal) wins. To make the game last longer play the game to cover all the images on your board.

Bingo Game Variations

Bingo games are a great way to work on a child’s vocabulary words.

The cards can also be used for charades. You can have your child pick up a card and then she will need to describe it. For example if she picks up a robot, she can describe its color, how many hands it has, etc. Or she can choose to act it out by acting like a robot.

My preschoolers favorite bingo game is Zingo. It is the perfect introduction to board games and for children to learn to take turns. If your child is older she can play Numbers Zingo and Sight Words Zingo.
